Library Tutoring Pitfalls & Solutions

Tutoring at the Library

Tutoring at the library, does this limit my tutoring business?

I think this depends on your business plan. I had a friend who was tutoring at her local library and these were some of the things she ran into.

  1. Students didn’t show and she would worry about where they were at.
  2. Parents wouldn’t pick their kids up on time, so she had to sit and wait. Then she had to determine if she should charge extra for making sure they were supervised. (The answer to that is YES!)
  3. She was working with some kids who needed homework support and others who needed direct instruction. That stretches you very thin. It may or may not produce the results you want.
  4. Sometimes there were distractions she had to work around.
  5. Sometimes her space was actually taken by others.

Solutions:

  1. Make it very clear to the parents that they need to walk their child in and out of the lessons and must remain on the premises during the entire lesson.
  2. If parents are not back at the determined time, you make it very clear that there is an additional fee and be clear about how much it will cost the parents.
  3. Have a specific time for homework help and a specific time for tutoring help. Homework help is a great time to have a small group, but tutor time should be limited to 1-3 kids working on the same skill and doing the same thing.
  4. Use a specific room that you can actually hold so it is the space for you at the specific time you plan to work with kids. This will limit distractions and you know your space will be there when you arrive.

If that seems overwhelming, then I suggest you find a different place to tutor! This is why I tutor online! Easy, simple, and I control the distractions on my end!
