Best Places to Tutor

What are some of the best places to tutor?

As I have stated before, you have to decide if you plan to travel or work from home or perhaps do a hybrid tutoring business. Everything works! The good news is that YOU get to decide what that looks like for YOU!

But, you might be looking for some ideas, so here you go!

  1. Public Libraries (hint: use the study rooms). Most public libraries will allow you to use their space for tutoring. It is a good idea to ask, but most are fine with you meeting and supporting students. I have tutored from a local library and have used their study rooms. I tutor online, but I was able to use their wi-fi and their space to meet with my students.
  2. Community Centers might be a good solution for you. If you have a community center and they allow tutoring, it would be a great space to meet with your students. You can be available in a public space and perhaps offer small group tutoring! There is a parking lot, bathroom, and you don’t have to go to anyone's house!
  3. Coffee Shops can work for older students. I would caution that if you are meeting there for younger students, find a space that is quiet and free of distractions. This will actually work for all of the settings. The tutor is looking at the activity of the people around you, and the tutee is facing away from that. Parents can stay and sip their coffee while you work with their students. If you are working with older students, you can sip your coffee while you work with the student!
  4. Student Homes are a great space to tutor. I did this when I first started. The child is home and you just show up! Knowing your family is very important because you don’t want to be in the house without parental supervision. This will keep you and your student safe. However, I do know that some people do not like to go into homes, so you may want to consider the choices listed above or move to #5.
  5. Online Tutoring is an easy and convenient option for tutoring. You decide what system you will use for tutoring and then you meet online. This keeps everyone from traveling and you are able to have instant meetings with the flexibility to meet from anywhere in the world. This is my personal favorite!

Rethink Your Tutoring Strategy This Fall! When I was a classroom teacher, I typically put my job first. I know, that is a terrible thing to do, but I believe it was because I had SO MUCH to do, the job just never seemed to be done! Once I retired and decided to tutor, things slowed down and I did a ton of reflection. I realized that the school district did not care how many hours I put in. They didn’t care how much I worked. They just wanted a warm body in the room and they wanted the kids to...
