1st Semester is Almost Over!

1st Semester is Almost Over!

We are closing in on the end of the first semester of school! Within a month or so, the transition to the second semester will begin.

Students have had their parent teacher conferences, parents may have learned that their child is in need of additional supports either through a Student Assistance Team process, a formal 504 Plan, or even an IEP. Sometimes parents worry that this is a bad thing for their child. It is not a bad thing!

Those plans are set up to support your child and holds both the school and the child accountable for actionable steps they will follow as a team to make changes happen in a systematic way.

But, wait! Your child may not have a plan to follow. Perhaps they are just a little bit behind in one area. The question becomses, should I get help or will my child be able to self-correct? I think that comes down to what your child is able to accomplish on their own.

Upon reflection, having served so many students over the many years I have been an educator, I would not wait to do some form of intervention. You can totally do this at your home. But, if you are worried the problem may be bigger, then schedule some time with me and we can chat about a plan of action you can follow or work with me to accomplish!

I have a set calendar for my consultations with parents, but if the date or time doesn't work, just message me and we can find one that works better with your work or personal schedule.

Here is the link for scheduling an appointment: https://calendar.app.google/M97GiN8dtAmNpcuVA

I know it says reading assessment, but if your child need support with something else, just let me know what it is in the message, and I will be happy to chat with you about your child's needs.

I have been very fortunate to meet some amazing tutors that I can always refer you on to in the event I am not the best fit for your child.

I recently created a new product that may help your child or the children you support with writing!

Sometimes we find ourselves in a rut and need support in creating a plan for teaching writing. I typically just respond to the needs of my students, but after some serious reflection, I decided to create a lesson plan that I can use anytime with my writers. It begins with editing sentences and ends with the creation of a solidly written paragraph.

The lesson plan is fully editable. If you decide you are interested in purchasing it, I highly recommend you make a personal copy of it in your Google Drive so you can edit it as you see fit. There are 7 steps to the process and all of the pages are printable or can be typed on via a Google Doc or edited in your writing app on your tablet or computer (like Kamiapp).

The Year in Review! This year has been a year of growth for me professionally as well as for my students! Let's chat about it! For my students: Most of my students were published in a poetry anthology earlier this year. This was inspired by a review of poetry during our spring assessment review. I wanted it to be fun, and sometimes just reading poetry is not as exciting for those boring slides that we can read with old poems on them. We dove in and learned about rhyming, poetry patterns, and...

Have You Discovered The Tutoring with Sheryl Podcast? Yes, it is a REAL thing! I began a podcast about 5 or 6 years ago as I was learning new strategies to use in my classroom with my students. It was always a goal of mine to get the kids to learn new technologies that they could use later in life. As I was learning more about Google apps, I began my journey preparing for the Google for Educators Certification. One of the things you had to understand was how to create a blog and at that time,...

I know that I have a couple of additional items to get purchased and wrapped for some special people in my life! I guess I had better get moving on that! A few years ago, I put together a list of ideas for parents and I had posted it on my old website. I had focused on math games for kids. I dove into my...
