Rethink Your Tutoring Strategy This Fall

Rethink Your Tutoring Strategy This Fall!

When I was a classroom teacher, I typically put my job first. I know, that is a terrible thing to do, but I believe it was because I had SO MUCH to do, the job just never seemed to be done!

Once I retired and decided to tutor, things slowed down and I did a ton of reflection. I realized that the school district did not care how many hours I put in. They didn’t care how much I worked. They just wanted a warm body in the room and they wanted the kids to be passed on to the next grade. Okay, that is a bit cynical, but that is how I felt after all of my years in the classroom.

When I decided to build my business, I had to take a new approach. If I didn’t, I was going to be burnt out all over again and really not like my job.

I started slowly and took my time.

Tech Coach for Tutors

I am a seasoned educator and reading specialist, empowering struggling readers from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade through evidence-based methods rooted in the Science of Reading. I personalize instruction, blending phonics, decoding, spelling, writing, and comprehension, fostering significant reading achievement. I have helped over 40 families move their child forward with their learning in the last 3 years. I have an established following on my Facebook pages where parents seek information about reading and tutors seek information on how to tutor online with little to no effort. My YouTube pages continue to grow their reach, as do my social media channels on Instagram and TikTok. Beyond my direct work with students, I also equip fellow tutors in the Tech Hub for Tutors with essential digital literacy and marketing skills, maximizing their impact. I support almost 200 tutors through my digital newsletter, I have worked with nearly 50 educators in one-to-one mentoring sessions in the last two years, and I have a growing private membership in The Tech Hub for Tutors. I have been a guest on the podcasts, The Online Tutor Podcast and Tutoring Tips for Teachers. I have also made several guest appearances and led educational summits including IMPACT 6 and SOAR 1 and 2.

Are You NEW to Tutoring and Don't KNOW Where to Start? I recently met with a tutor who has been tutoring for free for a number of years but she is ready to start her business. She joined The Tech Hub for Tutors to figure out what to do. We chatted for about an hour today on a private call and worked through a number of things she could do right now to gain traction and turn her charity work into a paying job. She was happy to hear that she is a few steps closer to making her dream a reality....

Pitfalls for Tutoring at the Library-Simple Solutions

Tutoring at the Library Tutoring at the library, does this limit my tutoring business? I think this depends on your business plan. I had a friend who was tutoring at her local library and these were some of the things she ran into. Students didn’t show and she would worry about where they were at. Parents wouldn’t pick their kids up on time, so she had to sit and wait. Then she had to determine if she should charge extra for making sure they were supervised. (The answer to that is YES!) She...

Top 5 Tutoring Places What are some of the best places to tutor? As I have stated before, you have to decide if you plan to travel or work from home or perhaps do a hybrid tutoring business. Everything works! The good news is that YOU get to decide what that looks like for YOU! But, you might be looking for some ideas, so here you go! Public Libraries (hint: use the study rooms). Most public libraries will allow you to use their space for tutoring. It is a good idea to ask, but most are fine...
