The Dreaded Book Report

I have several older students who are expected to read books and write reports. As usual, I try to encourage my parents to reach out and use me as a resource for these big projects. I get to celebrate my student success as they share all of their writing projects at school. Here is a recent blog post I shared with my families. I wanted to share it with you as well!

Book reports can feel overwhelming—but they don’t have to be!

Each week, I share book recommendations that your child can easily dive into to help introduce them to new genres and inspire a love of reading. After all, the ultimate goal is just to get kids reading!

However, your child’s teacher might sometimes have an extra assignment in mind: the dreaded book report!

This past week, several of my students mentioned that they are currently reading a book for a report, drafting their thoughts, or wrapping up their final submissions.

I am always happy to support them with these projects. Whether your child already has their chosen book, an outline form from school, or simply needs help organizing their ideas, I can guide them through the entire process. This helps take the stress off your shoulders at home! And if your child hasn't been given specific directions on how to structure their report, don't worry—we can start with a blank slate together.

I love hearing what students are reading, seeing how their writing develops, and chatting about what they loved (or didn't like!) about their latest book.

Looking for book inspiration? If you haven't already, be sure to follow me on YouTube and check out my Great Books for Kids playlist! I highlight some wonderful library finds that might just be the perfect match for your reader.

Happy reading and reporting! Let me know how I can support you and your child along the way!

I meet with kids all over the United States and Canada. One of my homeschool kids was so excited at this morning's lesson. He said he had read a book to his mother this week and she was so excited that he was reading faster and making better stops at the end of his sentences. (Fluency for the win!) I was so delighted and we talked about what a big difference this is making for him. He is currently reading a nonfiction story about Blackbeard and he will be writing an essay about it after we...

This week I put together The Dyslexia Road Map to help you get a grasp on what Dyslexia is and what it isn't. I also addressed specific things you can do to start the conversation at school to get the help your child deserves. And, I offered some simple solutions to help any struggling reader. I hope you will tune into the conversation. I recorded it several places. I made a Reel over on Instagram. I recorded a conversation for you to listen to on Spotify. I recorded a video using the LIVE...

A child trying to spell.

I can teach spelling patterns all day long and it DOES help many of the kids I support. However, sometimes a speech issue will actually keep a child from using the pattern because they continue to say the word wrong. This week I ran into this same problem again and I made a quick video about it. Tune in here to learn more! 731 County Road 5, Oakland, NE 68045Unsubscribe · Preferences
