How do I prepare for my tutoring lessons?

This is a GREAT question—and I believe it starts with knowing my students!

I ALWAYS begin services with a basic assessment. As we continue working together, I take notes, observe what each student can demonstrate, and continually assess their skills and growth. I also complete quarterly assessments to track overall progress.

All of this information helps me create a path for each student based on their individual needs. No two students are exactly alike, so their tutoring shouldn't be either!

Do you continue your education?

YES! I actually completed more continuing education this morning!

I attended a training provided by Dr. Anita Archer and sponsored by The Dyslexia Institute of Indiana.

I first took Dr. Archer's Explicit Instruction course about 20 years ago, and it was pivotal to my pedagogy—or, simply put, my teaching practices. I believe there should be no mystery about what a child is learning, and Dr. Archer has been a wonderful role model for me throughout my career.

I remember reading her book multiple times, and taking her live instruction all those years ago was a highlight of my own professional growth.

So when I saw she was presenting today, I made sure I signed up!

Today's training focused on best practices for supporting students with dyslexia and bilingual learners, along with instructional models that WORK.

I was reminded of simple strategies that can increase student participation and engagement. I was also reminded of something equally important:

I'm already doing a great job—and I can continue to build on what is working for MY students.

That was a pretty good reminder to receive on a Saturday morning!

I wanted to share this little sneak peek into my world with you.

Running a small literacy tutoring business can sometimes feel a bit lonely. There isn't a whole team sitting in the next room to bounce ideas off of. That's why continuing education, learning from experts, and staying connected to other educators are so important to me.

I hope this little peek into my world gives you confidence in me, my teaching practices, and the work I do with the students who see me each week.

Your child's tutoring plan isn't pulled from a one-size-fits-all program. I am continually learning, observing, assessing, and adjusting so I can meet your child where they are and help them move forward.
