Is Waiting the Answer?

Is Waiting the Answer?

When a Child Is Struggling With Reading—Why Waiting Usually Doesn’t Work

Do we wait to get children the help they need with reading when we know they are struggling—but hope they will eventually catch up if we just give it time

After many years in the classroom and now as a private reading tutor, I can say with confidence that waiting rarely works.

When a child struggles with reading, writing, or spelling, it is usually because something important is missing in their skill set. For example, a child might:

  • Have trouble hearing the individual sounds in words
  • Struggle to connect sounds with letters
  • Have difficulty recalling how to form letters or link letters to sounds when reading words
  • Be able to sound out words but read too slowly to remember what they just read
  • Be able to read the words but not understand the meaning
  • Read the text but struggle to answer questions about it

That’s a long list—and it’s not even exhaustive. There are many different reasons a child might struggle with reading.

If your child is a young reader and their teacher has mentioned that they are behind, it’s important not to ignore that signal. Children rarely catch up simply by staying in the same environment without targeted support.

In most cases, a structured, systematic approach to reading instruction can make a tremendous difference.

The key is identifying the underlying issue and then taking action to address it.

Every child is different, and every child needs support tailored to their specific needs. Finding the right professional to assess the problem and provide targeted instruction is often the fastest way to get a child back on track.

Reading is the foundation for much of the learning that happens in school. From reading the whiteboard and following written instructions to understanding textbooks and novels, strong reading skills affect nearly every subject.

When a child falls behind in reading, the challenges tend to compound as the school year progresses and the work becomes more demanding.

The earlier the right support is put in place, the easier it is to close the gap and build confidence.

If you’re concerned about your child’s reading progress, don’t wait. Reach out to learn more about how targeted reading support can help identify the underlying issue and build the skills your child needs to succeed.

I would be happy to talk with you about your child’s specific needs and discuss whether tutoring might be a good fit.

Is reading time ending in tears?

Let's Get the Inside Scoop For many years, American school systems have been drifting further and further away from phonemic awareness and phonics in grade schools. There has been a BIG shift toward whole language learning and less of an emphasis on HOW kids learn to read. The thinking was that the more kids are exposed to reading, the more they will learn about reading. There is some merit to this. Having a text-rich environment, reading to your children, and sharing your love of reading...

What to Do When Your Child Can't Tell if a Syllable is a Short or Long Sound I run into this problem with struggling readers. They get stuck when learning how to read compound words and multisyllabic words (word with many syllable sounds) because they don't know a few things. They are not sure where to find the syllable sounds in a word like snapshot. The first thing we do is say the word together. "Snapshot." Then I remind them that each that we said the word as snap shot. It had 2 syllable...
